Student Life

Chapel

The heart of the spiritual life at Vanguard are the chapel services held Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Chapel services challenge students to live a life of dedication to Christ through preaching, teaching and worship.  Chapel services provide both a time of worship in song and praise, as well as an opportunity to receive devotionally from the Word. Chapels happen twice a week, Tuesday from 12:45-2:30pm and Thursday from 10:50-12:00.

Sports

Men’s League Soccer Team.  Our men’s soccer team plays in the Edmonton and District Soccer Association League which hosts over 400 teams.

Co-Ed Volleyball.  Our co-ed volleyball team plays in the Edmonton Volleyball Association League with over 130 teams.

Community Discipleship/Mentoring Groups

Vanguard Faculty and experienced ministry leaders host the small groups that are devoted to peer accountability, personal support, fellowship and prayer.  Our students have an incredible opportunity to learn not only from experienced ministry leaders but also from each other.

Inter-Departmental Events

Vanguard College strives to create a connected community.  One of the ways that this occurs is through inter-departmental events.  These events occur throughout the year and provide opportunity for students in a various programs to connect with each other outside of the class room.

Field Education

Ever since Vanguard began, we have had a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on learning. Our experiential learning model makes sure what you are putting in your head makes its way to your heart, where it will stay, and bring change in your life and the lives of those you may meet.

Vanguard’s Field Ed program is at the centre of our hands-on learning model. Students are required to work with a church or ministry organization while they learn here – even if they are only here for 1 Year. Sometimes, this field-ed is done within the program, through a ministry team. The Choir, CFM, HMS team, Kids Travel Company and Youth Ministry Impact Team are prime examples of this. These traveling teams expose even 1 Year students to a variety of real-life ministry situations within their year with us.

Each student will be responsible to complete  20 hours per month.  Students continuing into a 4 Year Degree will have to do a more intensive, 400 hour internship before they graduate. – the idea being that when they go out to become pastors in a church setting, they will have already tried most of that role on for size.

Nothing prepares you like the real thing.

We’ll Put You in Your Place

If you are moving in to Edmonton or don’t have a placement there is no need to worry.  Every year during registration week there is a ministry fair where you can learn about a variety of ministries looking for students and choose which one fits you best.  If you are still unsure your program Director and Field Ed Director will be happy to tell you about the many placements they know are available.

Vanguard Field Ed and Internship experiences are closely monitored by your Program Director and your Practicum professor through your practicum classes that occur once per week.   These classes are designed to not only challenge you both personally and in your ministry setting but also to provide an additional mentoring environment.
