TESOL

Our TESOL program is offered through Vanguard Taylor Language Institute (VTLI).

The TESOL Certificate program focuses on the growing demand both in Canada and overseas for teachers of English as a second or foreign language.  This profession can be a valuable form of ministry by taking advantage of opportunities that may not be available through conventional forms of overseas evangelism.

Our program teaches methods and materials in teaching, the theory of second language acquisition, and 6 credits of linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax).  This is followed by practicum experiences in both observation and teaching.

How Do I Study?

1

Step One is completing 4 required courses in which the foundation subjects for Teaching English are presented in an integrated format (12 Credits).  Two courses are completed partially online.  Online portion must be completed before in class session.

2

Step Two is a practicum where students complete 10 hours of observation in an ESL classroom, followed by 10 hours in a class of teaching in an ESL classroom.  There are 20 hours of practicum in total (3 Credits).

3

Step Three of the TESOL Certificate, B.A. Intercultural Studies, and M.A. Intercultural Studies requires courses that will be of tremendous value in a missions/ministry setting.  The courses give an understanding of Scripture, an introduction to cross-cultural principles and help develop a better relationship with your local church, mission agency, ESL ministry, or immigrant centres.

  • Biblical Theological Studies (12 Credits)
  • Intercultural Studies (3 Credits)

EXPERIENCE

The TESOL Certificate program focuses on the growing demand both in Canada and overseas for teachers of English as a second or foreign language.  This profession can be a valuable form of ministry by taking advantage of opportunities that may not be available through conventional forms of overseas evangelism.

With careful training and experience, TESOL can be a tremendous tool that can be used to share your faith with someone of another language group.

EDUCATION

Our programs teach methods and materials in teaching, the theory of second language acquisition and 6 credits of linguistics (the sound and form of English).  This will be followed by independent practicum experiences in both observation and teaching.

Please Note:  A high school diploma is required to complete any of the TESOL programs.

An undergraduate degree is required to be eligible for TESL Canada professional certification.

OUTCOMES

Our goal is to train graduates who can work with confidence as they prepare lessons, work in a classroom and understand the challenges that various people groups may have with learning English.

Upon completion of this course (30 credits) students will receive a TESL Canada approved certificate, which is the first step in being professionally certified through TESL Canada (Click to learn more about the benefits of TESL Canada certification.). Students will also be able to use their training in cross-culture ministry almost anywhere in the world.  Information on how to apply for TESL Canada certification will be provided to all students who enroll.
